    WikiHouse is an open source construction set. It's aim is to make it possible for anyone to download designs from a global commons, adapt them, and create a house suited to their needs, without formal skills, power tools or much money.

    Great idea, just the sort of thing we need.....as long as there is a feed back and improvement mechanism in the process it the perfect starting place.

    With the tools...is this 3d printing or some special cutting tool that knows how to read the format of the files?

    CNC on Wood + Cal Earth Housing

    I definitely think this is a step in the right direction for open-design/open source access for housing. Any solution to the locale has to take under consideration the resources and local tools available. This current project functions with CNC machining for wood, an example of which can be seen here:



    For most other people in the world, a more viable option might be what Nader Khalili designed:

    (Robotic Automation) Open Source CNC Gantry Router

    The Kikori is a 4x8 open source CNC gantry router designed to be a solid, adaptable, entry-level machine for small businesses. It is made out of Medium Density Overlay board, or MDO, which unlike MDF is both very strong and highly resistant to swelling due to moisture. Its essentially a robot capable of milling complex three-dimensional shapes out of wood, soft metals, and plastics.
    My design requirements for the Kikori were as follows:

    It must be able to make its own parts (self-replicate)

    It must have a milling area of at least 4x8x6

    It must be very rigid to maximize speed and accuracy

    It must cost under $5,000 to build
