    Exclamation Forever Military

    Sad But True
We will always need a military to stand as our physical defense from harm by others. As our world perfects itself, we will nolonger need to protect ourselves from other humans. But there are other species in this galaxy, and they may not posess the wisdom that allows all intelligent life to move foreward and work together. Some will surely be more advanced technologically, and socially immature and therefore choose to conquer and destroy. Just look around our own planet and you will see that we can allready do that on a planetary scale.

Walk Softly And Carry A Big Stick
I believe we have the means to be the ones to have the BIG guns in this galaxy, and yet also remain socially defensive. We will keep our military 'know-how' a secret until the moment we need to use it. And if we don't need to use it, nobody will know what weapons we have. (we will not be bullies) Nobody will ever convince me that my military service was a waste of time. As senseless as it may seem, all it will take is one species with a bigger stick, and the will to use it, to put an end to all of humanity.

No. Military for this will never be needed. Not now, not in the future.

The only enemy this planet needs to concern itself with is that species of hairless apes that are currently doing there best to make this whole place uninhabitable for any and all species. However over or undeveloped they might be. A Dead Planet isn't worth anything to any species
Trust me, I'm not from here, I know.

The issue made here is not for the time being. Our problems now, (unless you know otherwise) are not the threat of an external species or an asteroid. Let's deal with our "local" earth problems first and then this discussion may have some meaning.
As far as for the military service, it is how you see it. You can always make some "good" even from the "worst". If for example you have learned some survival skills these may prove handy in our times. For different purposes than the actual military service intended but nonetheless worthy. Also you can keep some friendships with other people that had the same problems and/or concerns then. And lastly if at that time you had a more advanced thinking maybe you can do some sociological studies about the military service.

It's understandable that you feel this way OP, for it is how you, and a great deal of people nowadays are conditioned to think. I used to believe that killing any external threat for self preservation was the correct path, but now i'm not so sure (or rather, sure that I was incorrect). Maybe you should do a bit more contemplating on this topic before you proclaim it as undeniable?

I agree with the OP, you will need some kind of force to defend the rest of the population i mean its in natural law "the strong will survive" whats going to happen when someone that doesn't agree with the way you see things and wants to kill you and your spices? and by someone i'm referring to non earthlings.

i also agree with kwizrak our problems right now on earth don't require a military force, and i am aware that i myself have properly been conditioned to think this way but even star trek had the enterprise!

to quote AvP i would rather have a gun and not need it than need it and not have it.

Just wanted to mention it is not just the strong that survive: there are examples of other (non-human) **social** creatures on our planet that cooperate in order to better their chances of survival.

Strength is the ability to exercise power. Power is the expenditure of energy per unit of time. Cooperation is *always* a path to greater power. If you want humans to be a formidably powerful species, unite them within a resource based economy. The level of cooperation among ordinary citizens in the RBE will be orders of magnitude beyond anything that even the standing armies of today are capable of exercising. The power those people will wield is essentially beyond our comprehension.

Defense force v's Conquering force ... what is the purpose of a military?

I see no reason why there could not be a defense force in an RBE, just in case (maybe its drones/technology etc ... although i am against these things today) , but hopefully there would be little need for it.

    Scarcity-driven mechanisms of pillage

The military is an extension of the state, and the state holds monopoly on violence in the state in this way.
In an environment where scarcity is a reality, it is to be expected that resources such as land, rare earth minerals, clean drinking water, knowledge and other necessities for prosperity become guarded from those whose easiest choice is to raid the accumulated wealth of others.

Would the raiders be on the move if they had an excellent standard of living? Even if someone else was living closer to a nexus of prosperity, and thus had an even better standard of living?

I think not. We have never known a kind of world where such access abundance is a reality.

If the raiders stop, so will the countermeasures for raiding. The decay will be slow, but they will. It will be less likely for social pathologies that would bring about violence for the sake of violence as well to lift their heads in environments of abundance as well.
