    Proposal: Planting the Seed

We'd like some constructive feedback on a very rough draft of a proposal. This is an attempt to gather a collection of raw ideas, work on them and evolve them until we eventually have a tangible plan.

At the moment, it seems that the emphasis is on waiting it out until the current system collapses on its own before we attempt to build a new system/society.

But, what if we plant a seed and see whether it actually comes to fruition. Start small. Small but tangible. We have an ocean of ideas and different approaches to realize this resource based society; but we won't know what works and what doesn't, we won't learn how to evolve it into a system that can actually function until we put it to the test on a very small scale and learn and grow.

In other words, can we please get started? Not just by talking and researching and theorizing, we; up until this point, have done a lot of that which was of course much needed. And we have come up with plans that work - in theory. We have so much knowledge and we think it's time that we took the first physical step even on a very small scale. Some knowledge will only come by doing - from experience.

We understand the value of patience. We understand that a perfect solution is not yet available. But a workable solution is not available exactly because nothing has been done yet.

We should use the opportunity that in certain parts of the world the system is actually waiting for collapse. But only if a step in a different direction is taken. The only thing that's standing between us and this collapse is the belief/thought that we are not there yet. We are there if we realize that we are, and that we should start something, somewhere, now. Until that step is taken, we will be remain in this oblivious, in between, friction/struggle and nothing will happen. Maybe some systems in the world are just waiting for a simple push to fall.

Imagine that the monetary system as a wheel. This wheel can be stopped only by applying breaks, but if we apply the breaks too suddenly, we can cause very bad consequences. If these breaks are applied slowly, the wheel will gradually come to a stop. But what actually makes those breaks work? Action. This wheel/system is not going to stop until WE start applying the breaks.

The idea is to use the weakness of the monetary system in certain regions/countries around the world, regions that are weak but aren't too far from industries that could be utilized. Regions that already have enough resources to support a community on a very small starter-up scale. What regions come to mind for you? For us it is Greece. We chose Greece because the system there is already very weak. The second reason is its resources. Greece has many resources that could be used to create energy. The sun and the wind are two examples. The plan would be to choose a small island or a very small region, do an inventory of that region's resources, and what population can be sustained within that region with those resources. The next step would be to educate the people residing in that region and then educating the Greek people as a whole in order to obtain some sort of support or help. Support or help would be in the form of volunteer work, food, money, ideas, technology, water, and other material we can use. The end result of this would be to create a small self-independent region, a pilot, a test-site, call it whatever, but it will be the first step to freedom.

Yes, this system would have to start with money. The only way to access valuable resources right now unfortunately is money. But this community/system/society however small, when it becomes efficient enough to function alone, will be the first break in the chain.

We are not looking to create a self-sufficient society and stop there. There are many of those around the world. We are looking to create the first society with a goal to live independently from the monetary system. We are looking to build an example, a model site that works. We are looking to attract the attention of media and eventually the world.

We have to demonstrate that people can convert a failing, inefficient system to a functioning, efficient resource based system by applying a brand new concept of life.

Are you affiliated with telaithrion or RBE10k? Or maybe the 'Potato Movement'? They are all doing/planning something like that.

    Other threads discussing similar idea's:

    http://thezeitgeistmovementforum.org...esearch-cities
    http://thezeitgeistmovementforum.org...of-a-Test-City
    http://thezeitgeistmovementforum.org...-into-an-adult

Basically it boils down to first having a good plans and designs it seems:
1 - exact purpose (extend existing village to become self-sufficient or build new village)
2 - blue prints for the systems/houses (like earthship)
3 - inventory of machines and resources to get started
4 - schedule for how to do things

So far most people here are still at step 1.

I like your idea, but, we have to be realistic. Who do we know in Greece who would give us a plot of land? Anyone? I will eventually inherit a small plot of land in Austinville, Iowa. This is where we could start. Unfortunately, I am in the midst of raising kids and don't have a clue how to start this. It almost feels as though we would need to start as a commune, which is not ideal, but it is a start. Any thoughts? I'm tired of just talking, but we have to start somewhere. Who would be the engineers/farmers who could make a self-sustaining farming community? Anyone?

I think that we could all start with things in our control. I've started the following to educate myself. Vegetable garden, exercise, good nutrition, solar water heating, repair as much as possible, recycle.
Once we have this covered then we can organise groups of volunteers to help other willing participants to achieve the same especially the vegetation garden. I decided to volunteer about 6 hours of my time every second week and started a soup kitchen. We make 50L of food and feed about 100 people on about R255 (dinner for 2 at a restaurant).
That's 500ml of food for R2,55 I call this hacking food distribution. Once we have the veg gardens established we can start using the produce in the pot, l call this hacking food supply. This done on a bigger scale across the globe decreases our dependence on corporations and increases our interdependance on each other.
